Samsung is preparing for the Sydney 2000 Olympics with a video recorder that
will let sports fans record an entire night’s events without changing tapes.
Samsung’s Ultra Long Play VCR, which goes on sale in the US this month for
$199, can record 15 hours of TV on a three-hour tape. In extended play
mode, the tape runs at just 0.66 centimetres per second, a fifth of the normal
speed. Digital signal processing minimises the reduction in picture quality.
Other VCRs can only double or triple the recording time.
