Most drivers say they often give way at pedestrian crossings. But a survey of
drivers’ behaviour in Sweden has revealed that three out of four do not even
slow down when faced with pedestrians wanting to cross. Some accelerate.
András Várhelyi of Lund University also found that only 5 per cent
of pedestrians will step out and force cars to brake (Accident Analysis
& Prevention, vol 30, p 731).
