From 2004, sailors out of reach of land-based weather forecasts will be able
to get accurate weather news from GANDER, a 16-satellite constellation whose
sole purpose is to make ocean navigation safer. Satellite Observing Systems of
Godalming, Surrey, plans to launch the first GANDER microsatellite within 18
months. The constellation of low-orbit craft, weighing just 50 kilograms each,
will monitor most of the planet’s oceans by 2004. It will give sailors more
accurate and up-to-date information on critical navigation factors such as wind
speed and wave conditions.
