The Japanese government has warned citizens to stockpile several days’ worth
of food, fuel and water in preparation for the millennium bug. “It is important
for each one of us to make preparations in case of emergencies,” Prime Minister
Keizo Obuchi warned, though he predicted there should be no major
problems. The government has advised people to avoid using the telephone or the
Internet over the New Year, and to update their bank books beforehand.
