Satellite images have provided evidence of wanton destruction in East Timor.
Fred Prata, a remote sensing expert with the CSIRO, Australia’s national
research organisation, used data from the European Space Agency’s ERS-2
satellite to locate fires. The images provide a time series of the occurrence of
fires before and after the referendum on independence from Indonesia. The vast
bulk of these appear afterwards and match the positions of major settlements.
The images are at www.dar.csiro.au/info/ general/East%20Timor/fires.htm.
