The US government last week banned all exports of scientific equipment to
several research institutes in India, Pakistan, China, Russia and Israel which
it claims are secretly involved in the development of nuclear weapons. India,
however, has pledged to continue its nuclear research programme. Placid
Rodriguez, director of the Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research in Kalpakkam
in south India, says: “We have a nuclear programme for the whole fuel cycle from
mining to decommissioning reactors.”
