Sir Frank Whittle, the inventor of the jet engine, died in August aged 89. In
Genesis of the Jet (Airlife Publishing, £12.95, ISBN 1 85310 860 X), John
Golley charts the progress of this remarkable man and his grand idea. Years of
bitter struggle eventually brought recognition and the birth of the modern jet
engine, which has altered all our lives. Whittle’s story is an inspiration for
any would-be engineer or inventor.
