Safety code

2 October 1993

A code of practice on computer security published jointly this week
by the government and industry could help British companies to save an estimated
拢1 billion. This is how much money they lose every year through computer
fraud, fires, failures in computing networks and power supplies, computer
viruses and the activities of hackers.

Experts in computer security at eight leading British companies drew
up the 100-page code in conjunction with the Department of Trade and Industry.
It contains details of 100 individual security measures, including 10 key
measures that are considered fundamental to security.
